Understanding your fertility cycle

Body Temperature is the Secret to Fertility

Not many people know that there is a simple way of monitoring your fertility cycle by the month, the day, and even the hour. Your body temperature is the best and most direct way of keeping  track of your ovulation cycle -- but it can tell us so much more.

Basal Body Temperature (BBT)
Basal body temperature (BBT) is the lowest natural body temperature recorded after a period of rest. It is usually measured first thing in the morning, right when you wake up.

You might be familiar with one use of BBT - the "rhythm method" of contraception. In this method of preventing pregnancy, women track their body temperature every day to know when they are ovulating, and avoid sex on those days. For those who want to conceive, basal body temperature measurements have also been used for timing of intercourse during the most fertile window.

In my practice, I use BBT in a very different way -- not just to time ovulation and the best time for conception, but also to analyze every part of a woman's reproductive cycle. There is a very direct relationship between your body temperature and every stage of the reproductive cycle.

What BBT Shows Us

When you know what to look for, basal body temperature tells a lot more than day of ovulation. It can tell us about the health of your ovaries, uterine linings, follicle growth and development, and even point to very specific problems with LH, FSH, and other reproductive hormones. Just by keeping track of your temperature.
